If your pond’s gone murky and you want it looking better this week, not next month, RUSH is usually what we point people at. Here are the questions that come up most.
What is RUSH?
A granular treatment you sprinkle straight onto the water. It works on what you can see: floating matter, the matted stuff that collects on the surface, green scum on the rocks, and the nutrients feeding all of it.
It’s for stagnant, murky ponds where there’s visible build-up sitting on top and you want it gone.
How quickly does it work?
Within hours. You’ll usually see a difference in 24 to 48 hours depending on how much organic matter is in there, and one application keeps going for seven to ten days.
Does it contain harsh chemicals?
No. It’s a natural granular formula with no copper and no harsh chemicals in it.
What it uses instead are eco-based oxidisers. They speed up a breakdown your pond is already doing on its own, so the organic matter gets processed faster and the nutrients feeding it get used up along the way.
How do I apply it?
Sprinkle it onto the problem areas every three to seven days, or as needed. Target the build-up, spreading it evenly across the whole pond wastes most of it on water that doesn’t need treating.
Is it safe for fish?
Yes, at the right dose. If you’ve got fish, halve the standard dosage and apply it every two to three days instead of in one go.
The reason for that is oxygen. Breaking down a lot of organic matter uses it up, and warm stagnant water hasn’t got much to spare. If the pond is heavily stocked, get an aerator or fountain running before you start.
Has it actually worked for anyone?
Emma has a rural pond near Pukekohe, about 200,000 litres, used for swimming and with fish in it. She spotted algae starting to build and wanted to deal with it before it got away on her.
